Jenny Saville

An amazing painter who handles flesh like no other. I haven't seen her paintings in life yet, but the pictures and scale astound me. Jenny Saville

I saw her big stuff in 95/96 (I think) at The Saatchi Gallery in London and they made quite a splash. They are both technically amazing, collosal and quite disturbing. I think she was only 20 something at the time and pretty well straight out of art school. The recent stuff of wounds etc. remind me of a piece in Modern Painters about an artist who, (I would have to dig it out to see his name or the publication date) was asked to record the facial wounds of soldiers and airman during the first world war.. not a nice job. They looked like Francis Bacons.

Thanks for the information about the new stuff. I hope to be able to see that first set of paintings if the Saatchi collection ever gets around to New York.

Jenny Saville's paintings are stunning! If you like her paintings, look for paintings of Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Gottfried Helnwein, Heike Rushmeyer. You may like them also.

The Saatchi Gallery has a Jenny Saville page where you can look at some of her works and read commentary/articles and more.
