Casino Royale

Martin Campbell's telling of Ian Flemming's Casino Royale is brilliant. Casino, the first of the Bond stories, shows us how Bond becomes a double O. 007's story is revealed in layers, with the unrefined character played precisely by Daniel Craig, who is seen through most of the movie covered in cuts and scabs. Craig is infinitely more believable to me as a killer than the prettier Bonds. He's not the perfect, dapper gentleman of Bonds past. He's real and human, and that's why he comes off well. You get the sense that he's both vulnerable yet edgy -- like a crude diamond waiting to be cut and polished. By the end, you see him transformed into the ruthless spy with a sophisticated facade that is genuinely Bond.

The stunning Eva Green, who you might have seen in Bertolucci's Dreamers is easily the best Bond girl to grace a Fleming title. It's mesmerizing to watch this French actress onscreen and she delivers what many Bond girls of the past have lacked -- depth. She helps to give meaning to the spy with a license to kill -- who we are expected to follow through the series of stories to come. We understand after this film what shaped Bond's character and what makes killing in cold blood come easily to him.

There's a lot to like about this Bond. The action is delivered sparingly but executed intelligently. One thing I liked was the emphasis on the physical stunts. The opening scene is a Parkour chase that's less beautiful than we see usually in parkour videos, but works to great effect because it's crude and realistic. But, if you've seen Banlieue 13 (District B13) you'll notice that Casino pays homage to David Belle's opening Parkour sequence by having Bond's target launch himself through a high horizontal window. But if you are looking for car chases, rest assured that there is a great one in the first third that involves airports, gasoline, and a nano bomb.

But what I liked most of this film is that it is dark and gritty, and because of that it does justice to the story and characters. I've heard some people compare Casino to Batman Begins for it's place in resurrecting a story that had been left for dead. I think that's a pretty decent comparison. The realism of Casino is well-received. I don't want to see a spy story that sugar coats the action. The fight scenes here have a little more likeness to Scorsese than the Roger Moore Bonds I'd seen growing up. OK, maybe Scorsese might be a stretch, but really, it's got the texture and realism this story needs.

Let me sum it up for you: darker, edgier, with fewer gadgets, more realism, better acting, and bad-assed action. If you've ever loved watching Bond, and can go into this one with an open mind, you won't be dissatisified. Just leave your bias for Connery or Dalton behind.

Back in the day, the Tim Dalton Bond was supposed to be the "real gritty, Ian Fleming" Bond... there were articles about it in Rolling Stone and whatnot. I remember being all excited that it was going to be less glitzy and slick, only to be disappointed by something that felt a lot like the older Bond but more tepid and pensive.

But I still havent' gone to see this one...dang...now I really need to.

I don't think you'll be disappointed I think. Every December I take a few days off to watch movies. I saw I think 8 movies in the theaters last month, including seeing Casino twice. It's rare that I get to see an action movie that I think is worth recommending, but I would say this is worth the 10 bucks. The fact that is a Bond movie just brings me back to the stuff I loved seeing as a kid.

The longest Bond movie so far, at 145 minutes, but it breezes by even though it reigns in on the normally excessive action scenes and depicts spying a more 'mundane' and 'realistic' manner (or at least as true as the series has been so far). But the one-thing that bugs me about action movies, particularly the Bond franchise, is that they are, most of the time, childish male fantasies with an indestructible hero who has fun shooting up the place and beds beautiful women. I would like something new for a change but CR does have Bond get hurt and go through more pain than he has previously.
Daniel Craig has been given a lot of hassle over his casting as Bond (like Clive Owen, Jude 'Mr Pretension' Law or 10-year-old girl masquerading as a grown man Orlando Bloom WOULDN'T have been a big mistake?) but not only does he have his youth as an advantage (he's the first 30-something to be cast in the role since Lazenby), he's also pretty damn trim, has the intensity Brosnan lacked and is surprisingly loose in a role that usually requires actors to be stiff and unemotional. It's also good to a fresh face in the role and who cares if he is blonde? Or the shortest actor to play him so far?

I have to say that this is the best Bond yet and I can't wait for Quantum of Solace to come out this November. Daniel Craig kicks ass.

To be honest this was my favorite James Bond movie. I wasn't a big James Bond fan in the early movies, but casino royal did the trick. I think one reason why I really like it, is because I love to play poker, I guess it goes hand to hand. It was kinda of a long movie tho, but I enjoyed every minute of it

I saw this film when it was first released. Wow. It was james Bond as I have always imagined him. I grew up watching Roger Moore as Bond and liked him very much but as an adult I've read a few of the stories by Flemming and always picture a grittier Bond. This film portrayed what I felt was truer to Flemming's idea of the real secret agent. of course the film goes a little crazy with some of the scenes..nut hey it is still a big improvement and I can't wait for the next one.

Great Movie. I remember back when people debated that the actor for bonds would suck and how they wanteed the old bonds back but quite frankly he did a great job. I was amazed. The part with him being drugged was kinda cheesy but else great movie. 4.2 Stars!
