It's mostly done by hand with some help from the software I'm using.
For a few years now I've been capturing screenshots of sites with my screen capture tool, SnapWeb. In this set of grids, I've been using Photoshop to batch together the screenshots as a contact sheet.
hmmmmm, makes me wonder if you could just suck them into iPhoto (since it naturally displays pics in a grid), enlarge them to the right size, and take a screen shot of THAT ?

Possibly, but I don't use iPhoto. I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to my digital assets. If it works for you, go for it.
